But I’m A Busy Bee

18 Mar

Seriously!? March cannot be half over….

I don’t know about any of you but life is blowing right by me these days. I’ve started a new job, am relentlessly hunting down a new place to live to no avail (as I am commuting an hour both ways), trying to keep my exercise regimen, making time for J, writing, and now, I’m helping my precious best friend since birth plan her wedding (I get to be a bridesmaid!!!). Most of the time, the day goes by without me even stopping to eat- by 5pm I’m hungry, tired, and ready to flop in bed (my real bedtime? 11pm). Sadly, I haven’t even had a spare moment to read a book (favorite hobby!) and I must admit, that I haven’t been doing the best job of keeping my quiet time with God sacred.

SO what keeps you busy? Schoolwork, soccer tryouts, outings with friends, youth group, work? Our list of excuses for not making time to spend Jesus is endless. It’s easier to say “but I just didn’t have time” than to really admit YOU JUST DIDN’T MAKE TIME. There are so many things in life that Satan will use to keep us from studying the word. He wants us harried, tired, and distracted from the things of God and loves it when we make those excuses!!! I’m sure he does his own happy dance every time we shove his word aside for other things (picture a shriveled slimy black demon unfolding his withering limbs jumping about because he’s about to do some damage). Every time we choose to place something before God, it gives Satan a way to slither his way into our life. There’s a reason the bible is our sword- and when you’re not studying it, it’s much like you’re entering into a strong battle without your weapons.

Be advised ladies, I’m saying this for my own benefit as well as yours. There are days in my life where I THINK I am just way too busy for my God and his word. (emphasis on the think!)

Ever hear about Mary and Martha?

Luke 10:38-42

38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Imagine being in Martha’s place. Here she is, serving Jesus Christ in her home for crying out loud. We get stressed enough about a simple dinner party with friends much less having to worry about serving the savior of the world. I can just picture this wonderful lady planning away, making sure all her dishes are clean, the floor has not a speck of dirt, and the food stays hot for her guests. It must have been like my mom planning for Christmas- on steroids (I have nightmares about this cleaning, cookie baking, gift-wrapping frenzy). I can just picture her running back and forth muttering, becoming angrier and angrier with her lazy sister is just sitting with everyone else until she finally explodes. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle Martha forgot about one thing- she was serving JESUS. Martha was so busy preparing for the event, wrapping herself up with all the work needing to be done, and being angry with her sister that she was not listening to the words of her savior.

Just like Martha, we need to fight against getting “too busy” to sit at the feet of Jesus. When we neglect our spiritual health, we leave ourselves vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy. Read verse 42 again. Jesus needed Martha to see that when we give the first fruits of our time with the Lord, all we accomplish afterwards will be blessed. Don’t you think that the creator of the world can give you the strength to get it all done if you just put it in his hands?

Hunger for the Word

Job 23:10-12

10 “But he knows where I am going.
And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.
11 For I have stayed on God’s paths;
I have followed his ways and not turned aside.
12 I have not departed from his commands,
but have treasured his words more than daily food.

Can you believe it? God wants us to treasure his word more than food? Say what? Absolutely! Hebrews 4:22 states that the word of God is sharper than any two edged sword- hmmm… that might be more important than my banana and yogurt…. It might be. When you put the word of God in your heart it can heal wounds like medicine (Prov 4). Don’t know God wants you to do with your life? All the answers are in that big old book! Even more importantly, the word of God gives us the power to fight any battle in the world that will come our way. ANY BATTLE!

Busy 4

Let’s be real…

Am I suggesting that you get up at 3am every day to spend two hours each day pouring over the word of God?? No. I’m not (unless you feel the urge- more power to ya!). What I am saying is that God wants a piece of your time. Your savior wants to speak to you, he wants to comfort you, and he wants to protect you. He can’t do that if you ignore him. Whether you spare two hours or simply spend fifteen minutes putting the word into your mind- your ten times better off than expecting to get your weekly fill of the word only on Sunday mornings. All the answers to life are right in your hands!

FBV: Inspired by Spring

9 Mar

March officially does roll in like a lion! My house has been buried in snow- making my new commute to work extremely frightful- testing every ounce of driving skill I have (and believe me, I’m just not that skilled)! Since the weather refuses to warm up around here, it’s time to bring some spring into my life via my makeup case. If you’re anything like me, you wear the same makeup look almost every day. I rock my nude shadow, black liner, and peach blush glow about 28 days in the month. It’s time to mix it up- so I can at least feel some small measure of hope that warm weather is in fact on its way

Here are some popular beauty trends (only those worth following) that we will see everywhere this spring.

 pinklip3 pinklip2

1. Pink is the new Red

Toss those red lipsticks you’ve been hoarding and replace them with a lovely shade of pink! It’s less daunting, daring, and can be more universally flattering. Stores are rolling out shades and shades of pink lipsticks and consumers are snapping them up like candy. You will see the fashion world’s most influential females walking the streets with these feminine shades! Still attached to your red? Go one shade to two shades lighter or switch to something with a bit more orange to brighten your look for spring. Here are some of my absolute favorite options:

pink3 pink2 pink1

·      MAC Pink Pigeon Lipstick – Limited Edition (a whopping 26 bucks- but so worth it!)

·      Revlon- 423 Pink Velvet (just 5$)

·      Clarins Joli Rouge- Baby Pink (22$ but great for anyone who needs something hypoallergenic like yours truly)

Violeteyes2 Violetshadow1

2. Violet Eyes

I’ll admit it, purple is probably one of my least favorite colors on the planet. I much prefer a gorgeous green, bold indigo blue, or vivacious coral. Even I however am intrigued by the soft, violet shades popping up on my Pinterest feed. It might be worth a try… If you have green eyes- purple will make this hardest eye color to genetically re-create sparkle like an emerald!

violet3 Violet2 violet1

  • Pur Naturals in Lavender (8$- available online, and safe for contact wearers)
  • Maybelline NY in Lawless Lavender (only 2$!)
  • Too Faced Exotic Color Intense in Violet Femme (18$ This one will last forever- the color is super-pigmented so beware! Use sparingly!)

  Mintnails2 Mintnails

3. An obsession with Mint-Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Probably the most standout spring obsession right now is the focus on the minty green color reminiscent of one of America’s favorite ice cream flavors. Clothes in this flattering color are flying off the racks. Recently I was at TJ Maxx, searching through the haphazard clearance section when I discovered a gorgeous mint nail polish I just HAD to have. Normally, I rock my dark “Lincoln Park at Midnight” by OPI on an almost daily basis but I haven’t taken the pale green off my nails since I brought it home.

mint3 mint2 mint1

  • Butter London in Fiver (15 whopping dollars but my absolute favorite- if I can afford it!
  • Revlon Top Speed in #320 Jaded (5$ and dries quickly for those days you’re in a rush)
  • Essie Mint Candy Apple (5-7$ depending where you get it

Happy Weekend Ladies!

Creatures of Emotion

28 Feb

Emotions3 Emotions4

  1. A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
  2.  Any of the particular feelings that characterize such a state of mind, such as joy, anger, love, hate, horror, etc.

feeling – sensation – sentiment – agitation – excitement

Emotions are a funny thing. Depending on the situation, they can swiftly move us from feeling ecstatically happy to completely distraught in a split second not unlike a see-saw.  What I find most amazing is how powerful feelings can be (if we let them). One minute, I can feel on top of the world and the next, like a pathetic loser.  BAH!

Some Common Emotions (and how I personally associate them)

Happy– My favorite book gets released! or when J brings me flowers unexpectedly (this doesn’t happen very often- many silly romantic notions fly out the window when you date a real guy and not a fictional character- lol)

Distraught– When I lock my keys in my car in front of a wonderful but jenky Chinese restaurant forty minutes from my place of residence

Livid– Seeing my sister wear my clothing before I even had the chance to take the tags off or when I find out someone of age is not registered to vote (guilty as charged- I love politics)

Embarrassed– Getting my period in the middle of the day, and of course I have no tampon or any way of obtaining one any time soon. Oh yeah, and I’m wearing white pants

Frantic– Yikes! My alarm did not go off again and there’s no time for even a flick of mascara.  Or more seriously, when my windshield wipers ice over in the middle of a snowstorm

Nervous– My first day of work. Before a test. Getting up in front of a large group of people. Important tests.

Let’s not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it.  ~Vincent Van Gogh, 1889

Here’s another thing about emotions: they are POWERFUL! One emotion can make or break a situation.  A single feeling you take away from one situation will often carry over into the rest of your day if you don’t control it. For example: Let’s say you and your mom have a fight over your curfew time and you leave your house with steam coming out of your ears to meet up with your friends. Later that night your closest friends harmlessly tease you about your latest crush. Instead of laughing along with them, you take your anger out on them by coming up with a snappy, hurtful comment. A fight follows. It didn’t matter if your curfew was later or not- you go home early anyways. You weren’t angry at your friends- but you took it out on them.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes we try to stuff our feelings deep inside of us. If we don’t think about it, then it will eventually go away right? Wrong! This is not a better solution. When we stuff emotions down deep into our hearts, eventually they bubble to the surface like a volcano- and once you start, you can’t stop!

Who’s in Control: God, or your Emotions?

God created humans, especially females, with an amazing emotional capacity. If you are ever looking for an example of how God used an emotional human, read Psalms. King David was a great and powerful king however he was often overcome by his emotions. When David was happy, he was dancing from the rooftops and when he was sad, well, David cried out in deep despair (can we say DRAMA king!). There were many times when David let his emotions lead him astray (adultery, murder, child out of wedlock… David really messed up) but somewhere along the way, he started trusting God and learned to balance them a little better.  This doesn’t mean David still didn’t have his moments- seriously, read Psalms.

We enter serious danger zones when we build our lives on our feelings. Satan likes manipulate our circumstances and our senses in an attempt to throw us off balance. He wants you so overcome with emotion, that you become an ineffective follower of Christ! Strong emotion can sometimes paralyze us and keep us from moving forward. Emotions also change with the wind. There is a definite possibility that you will not feel the same way about a situation tomorrow as you feel today. I can’t tell you how many times my childhood friend, Michelle, and I would be best friends on one day and mortal enemies the next. It was a constant up and down cycle. Feelings come and feelings go- it’s what we do with those them that really matters.

How to Deal…

Philippians 4:6-9

New Living Translation (NLT)

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

The way we must deal with our feelings is by choosing to believe God’s Word over what we hear, feel, or experience. Your emotions will be the fruit of what you believe deep down in your heart, and where your focus lies. So instead of struggling to change your feelings, begin first to work on your belief system. Get your head in the word and spend time praying to your maker. When we build up our faith in God, more healthy emotions will follow.

The Fabulous Female: Episode 1

21 Feb

“13 She selects wool and flax
    and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
    bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.”
 (Prov. 31)

YIKES! So apparently the Proverbs 31 woman is superwoman. She knows her fabric, how to cook, is a real estate mogul, an entrepreneur, she works tirelessly, is profitable, and can weave. Yep, she’s superwoman. If there ever was really such a woman on this earth, she’s be a world-wide celebrity (and I personally would have a strong urge to spit in her face).

Not to worry- These verses were not written in the bible to show females how inadequate we are- in fact, if you read this passage closely, it reveals more about a woman’s character than what she can do. So what is the point of all this? Let me just say that even as young woman in my late twenties (not so old, I know), I’ve learned there are some basic skills EVERY modern female should know. WE can be young, capable, fabulous, and live with character. This is my first of a series of posts I will interject in the future full of quick and easy things to know from beauty to cars.

Things Every Fabulous Female Should Know

How-To Episode 1

Put your hair up in a bun using only a pencil or pen. For those of you gasping at my #1 choice- don’t judge. Ever since I learned how to do this, I think I’ve used it almost every day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve broken a hairtie or gotten frustrated at work because my hair won’t stay out of my face. With a twist of my pencil, all my hair problems are solved- it’s that easy! As a writer, I am NEVER without at least a pen in my purse. Although the pencil bun is not going to win any style awards, it’s a quick way to get your hair off your neck in a pinch! See the tutorial here: http://www.wikihow.com/Put-Your-Hair-up-With-a-Pencil

Get rid of common laundry stains: Laundry is something I learned how to do very early in life- perhaps it’s because my absolutely wonderful mother has ruined more than a few items of clothing. I like to think of my wardrobe as an investment- I won’t buy anything I do not LOVE. When someone makes an investment, it needs to be cared for! I try to take care of my clothes as best I can. After many self-inflicted blunders of my own, I am a laundry master…

Offending Substance: Sweat

You’ll need:

6 tablespoons baking soda

1/2 cup water

Do this:

Combine ingredients to make a baking soda paste. Rub the paste onto the pit stain and let it sit for one to two hours before washing. Launder as usual.

Offending Substance: Grease
You’ll need:
1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
Do this:
1. Gently press the cornstarch into the stain with your fingers.
2. Let it stand for a few hours (overnight, if possible). Then simply brush it off.

And MORE….

Coffee or chocolate stains – Treat fresh stains immediately by sprinkling some baking soda on a damp cloth and wipe clean (as with all stains, the faster you take action the easier it is to get out.)

Ink stains – Apply hairspray to immediately loosen ink’s hold on fabric, then scrub in a little liquid detergent to clean thoroughly. (The active ingredient in hairspray is alcohol, so use rubbing alcohol first if it is more readily available.)

Grass stains – Use any liquid or powder detergent as a presoak. For durable fabrics like jeans, try soaking in a heavy-duty liquid detergent like Pine-Sol before washing.

For all delicate fabrics– Spot clean any stains with diluted vinegar or lemon juice, but test a small area first!

Create the perfect cat-eye: There is nothing more fabulous than sleek, inky black liner. It is the only beauty tool you need to go from day to night in less than five minutes. I’ve tried many liners in my years of beauty exploration and I’ve found that just a plain, simple pencil works best. Liquid and gels always seem to run for me. Just make sure your pencil is soft as well as waterproof.

How to apply: Starting at the center of the eye at the lash line, trace outwards and flick the liner up slightly at the outer corner. Use your lower lash line as a guide for the correct angle – as if you were drawing an extended lower lash line. Go back and lightly line the inner half of your top lash line and thicken the outer flick.

Play Guitar Hero: Video Gaming is a world I thought I could live without however it has become a staple at parties and get-togethers with friends. I grew up with sisters and have never owned a gaming system before last year when my BF surprised me with a Wii and a Mario Kart game. We have so much fun together.  Here is a How to guide to Guitar Hero- a more popular party game. If you’ve gotta play, you might as well win right? Here are some tips and tricks (from women’s health magazine).

Press and hold
Picking up your fingers takes more movement and time, and screws you up. As long as you hit the strum bar at the right time, you can get ahead on notes by pressing the colored buttons before they reach the bottom of the screen. If the same note comes up several times in a row, just hold it down and strum in time.

Strum both ways
The strum bar works in both directions, and so should you. A typical rookie mistake is to just strum downward; by going back and forth, you hit the notes much faster. But don’t double-strum! “If you miss a note, don’t panic and try to make up for it by strumming again,” Flores says. “Themore you strum and miss, the worse your score gets.”

Work the Whammy
When you have to hold a long note, wiggle the guitar’s Whammy bar to score extra points.

If all else fails, cheat (If you must!)
Putting the game in Hyperspeed mode gives you more time between notes. To use it, choose “Options” from the main menu and select “Enter Cheat.” Use the mnemonic “Oh boy, oh boy” to help you remember the code to go into cheat mode: Orange, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Orange, Yellow.

Roast a Chicken: Don’t be appalled at my stereotypical, every-woman-should-know-how-to-cook stance. I am as modern and independent as they come. I’m educated, in a career, and know more about cars than my significant other. I never thought of myself as a domestic person but I definitely understand the importance of culinary skills . No, you may never love it quite as much as I learned to but there is truly no easier way to a man’s heart than through his stomach. Not out to impress a man? Well, Believe me, nothing will impress your family and friends more than the perfectly roasted chicken. You can pair almost any side with it- mashed potatoes, beans, corn, salad.. the list goes on and on. I have never met a single person who did not enjoy a nicely prepared bird. And it’s so much easier than you think. For a foolproof recipe click here: http://www.wikihow.com/Roast-a-Chicken

To tie a Scarf: I’ve said this before- nothing fixes a wardrobe crisis better than a scarf. For thousands of years, men and women on every continent, and in pretty much every culture, have worn lengths of fur, soft hide or woven fabric for warmth, to soak up sweat, for ceremonial or religious reasons, as protection from wind and dust, as a mark of status, or simply to appear attractive. For whatever reason you want to wear one, click here for 15 ways to tie this essential accessory: http://www.thefashionspot.com/style-trends/news/171363-15-chic-and-creative-ways-to-tie-scarves

And now, Episode 1 is complete. None of us will ever be superwoman- but there’s nothing wrong with a little push in the right direction!

Let’s recap shall we?

Steps 1-6 to Fabulous:

  1. The Pencil Bun
  2. A Master’s Degree in Laundry Stains
  3. The Fierce Cat-Eye
  4. A Gold Medal in Guitar Hero
  5. Roasting a Bird
  6. Making any Outfit Chic with a Scarf

Confessions of a Worry Wart

19 Feb

“It was the spring of my junior year of high school — a particularly stressful time for many students. I had schoolwork to do, APs to study for, nightly soccer practice, and pit band rehearsal for the school musical. To put it lightly, I was overloaded.

One night while I was sitting in my final dress rehearsal for the school play, I started thinking about my boyfriend. We’d been dating since the beginning of the school year, and because he was my first boyfriend, I was very inexperienced when it came to relationships. As I was sitting in rehearsal that night, thoughts about our relationship just kept popping up in my head. Where was our relationship going? Was it a good, healthy relationship? What was it really based on?

While these were normal questions for anyone to ask, my reactions to them were both mentally and physically overwhelming. I couldn’t focus on playing my music, and I started breathing too quickly and trembling, convinced that my boyfriend would dump me and my world would fall apart. I kept imagining only the worst outcomes from this situation, until finally I couldn’t sit with the band anymore.” (story from kidshealth.org)

Worry1 Worry2 Worry3

A True Worry Wart

I don’t know about you but I tend to WORRY about everything. I shared the above story because I related closely to this girl’s situation (except for the being in a play part- NEVER gonna happen, lol). I am a tried and true “glass is half empty” thinker. I like to think of the worst-case scenario first. Then I won’t be disappointed later right? Here is my list of things that have caused me the most anxiety throughout my life (so far):

  1. My grades in school. Whenever I took a test, I would study for hours, days- however long it took for me to ingest as much material as possible. After said test, I would call my mom wailing, “I failed it, I just know I did!” Guess what? I never failed one test- In fact, I graduated at the top of my class both in high school and in college. So much wasted time worrying… for absolutely nothing.
  2. My looks. Oh boy, this is a big one for me! Not so much anymore but when I was younger, being in crowds was difficult for me. I would always think to myself, “is my outfit out of place?” or “I wonder if that group is whispering about me and the huge red pimple on my face?” Bah- I could go on and on. Most of the time, I preferred to stay in the comfort of my room with my books and fashion magazines. What I came to realize is that whenever I was in a group or at a party, I spent the whole time worrying about what others thought of me rather than enjoying myself. No one had to ruin it for me- I did a fantastic job of that on my own. I’ll let you in on a little secret: PEOPLE HAVE BETTER THINGS TO TALK ABOUT THAN YOU. When I went away to college I found that I actually had a passion for public speaking and communications. Go figure.
  3. Boys. In high school, I did not have one date- I’m not kidding you- NOT ONE! I went stag to the prom, and spent most of my days, weekends, and nights studying for AP classes. Deep inside, I wanted a boyfriend so badly. What was wrong with me? Was I too fat? My hair too red? My skin too pale? Was I too smart? Ack! It wasn’t until college that I discovered my “feminine mystique” if you will. As I became more confident, I got asked out more. This is not to promote dating a bunch of guys. I’ve shared before that I have not had many boyfriends but unfortunately have been on far too many dates than I would like to admit to. If the right guy hasn’t come along don’t waste your time worrying about what’s keeping him from you. Have fun with friends- you won’t ever regret that decision!
  4. Finances. If you’re in high school, this may not pertain to you but be advised, financial worries are lurking around the corner. It’s very difficult these days to be a self-sufficient young woman with student loans, rent, car expenses, and not to mention sky-rocketing gas prices. Learn this valuable lesson while you are young: Trust God with all your financial needs. When we are obedient in tithing and paying our bills, God will shower you with his blessing. He may not bring you what you want but you can guarantee that he will shower you with what you need.
  5. Am I “Good Enough?” As I begin my new job do I really have the skills to be successful? What happens if I fail? What if nothing ever comes from this blog? What if I heard God wrong? What if I won’t make a good wife someday? I still struggle with this one…

Worry is a Sin

The bible tells us specifically not to worry- more than once. God knew he would have to mention it several times to get this concept through our thick skulls- I just know it. See the following passages:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?… Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6: 25-27, 34)

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Reasons Not To Worry: (From Matthew 6: 25-34)

  • You should be able to trust the God who created you int he first place! (6:25)
  • Worrying about the future ruins the present (6:26)
  • Worrying is more harmful to you. Reality check: IT DOES NOT HELP (6:27)
  •   If we depend on God- we will not be IGNORED (6:28-30)
  • Worry shows a lack of faith (6:32)
  • There are real challenges God wants us to pursue, and worrying just keeps us from them. (6:33)
  • We should live one day at a time (6:34)

You see, God really does want us to enjoy our lives. He is not sitting up in the sky, looking down us from a cloud and striking humankind with lightning bolts just to make our lives miserable. He doesn’t want us to waste the precious time we have left here on earth stressing about things that will not matter in the future- God is far more interested in using us for his glory. Every person on this earth has something to worry about. What God really is asking us to do is to take our worries, roll them up in a ball and toss them to him. Not only is he a great catcher, he is more than capable to handle the heavy burdens that bog us down.

Whenever I get caught up in the worries of my own life, I like to listen to this song:

Come to me, you weary one.
And I will give you rest, I will give you rest.
Come to me, you weary one.
And I will give you rest, I will give you rest.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Take me upon you. I will give you rest.

Come to me, you broken one.
And I will give you peace, I will give you peace.
Come to me, you broken one.
And I will give you peace, I will give you peace.
I will calm your waters, and I will whisper,
“Peace be still.”
Take me upon you. I will give you peace.

Come to me, you burdened one.
And I will give you joy, I will give you joy.
Come to me, you burdened one.
And I will give you joy, I will give you joy.
You will rise like eagles, and my joy shall
be your strength.
Take me upon you. I will give you joy.

Come to Me By Kari Jobe

Be anxious for nothing.

S. A. D. (Single Awareness Day)

14 Feb

Ah wonderful. Single Awareness Day. Good to see you again. Tis a real pleasure.

Singles Awareness (or Appreciation) Day” (S.A.D.) is a humorous holiday, celebrated on February 14 (although some prefer the 13th or the 15th to get away from the commercialism associated with the 14th). It serves as an alternative to Valentine’s Day for people who are single, that is, not involved in a romantic relationship. Some people who observe S.A.D. do so out of spite for Valentine’s Day, as a Hallmark holiday, or for other reasons. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singles_Awareness_Day)

On My Twitter Feed:

Dreading the “single awareness day” tweets from all the girls tomorrow, instead of whining, talk to a guy and maybe something will happen.

anyone who tweets “happy single awareness day!!!” tomorrow will be immediately unfollowed

Happy Single Awareness Day everyone! Raising depression in singles one chocolate at a time

If you call it “Singles’ Awareness Day,” that is why you’re single.

If you’re single.. Happy Singles Awareness Day.. If you’re in love.. I hope you choke on a chocolate.. ❤

I’m not sure why it’s single awareness day too. Are you not aware that you’re single every other day of the year? PAY ATTENTION.

Looking at my Single Awareness Day playlist and it seems like there are a lot of angry girl singers out there :p. girl power on my show yo!

Hey does anyone know any good “Happy Single Awareness Day” jokes? HAHAHAHA! Good one, you guys! Comedy is fun.

COME on people! We should be above this whine fest! Believe me, for those of you who are single out there, I know how you feel- I did not have my first valentine until I was 24. Somehow, when that day rolled around, I always found myself alone. For all the single ladies out there, know that God is not keeping something from you in spite- he has prepared that special someone for you and you know what? You’re a lot better off waiting for the right one to come along rather than wasting your time with some jerk. The cost of a wrong relationship is much higher than being alone when it’s all said and done.

Jesus as Your Valentine

Don’t waste your time getting depressed over not having that special someone in your life yet. If you let yourself think about it, the loneliness can overwhelm you.

As many hearts yearn for someone to knock on their door with a dozen roses, take this day to remember your Savior- a God who loved us more than any human being ever could. With God, you are never without a Valentine! I know you may think I’m being cliche. Lalalala, yes God loves me, blah blah. Heed my words though- it is so true! Find comfort in the following verses and get over the pity partying- it will do you no good.

1 John 4:9-11 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Romans 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

Lessons from the single Ladies

Take the time today to do something fun (Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT drown your sorrows in chocolate)! I always tried to plan a party with friends or keep myself busy with hobbies I love.

  • Go shopping- Buy something impractical and frivolous (but inexpensive) like glitter nail polish
  • Go out to dinner with other single friends. Make reservations, get all dressed up, and paint the town purple!
  • Cook Dessert- and worry about diets tomorrow. This year I made 12 (yes, 12) Creme Brulees. 4 cups pf whipping cream, 10 eggs, sugar, and vanilla. PERFECT!
  • Buy yourself some daisies- They’re such a happy flower
  • Make Valentines for all your friends. I especially like this idea- Healthy Gummy Bears packaged beautifully to give away. see the tutorial here: http://undressedskeleton.tumblr.com/post/42764785751
  • Get away from the commercialism: turn off the TV, put down your phone and computer. Grab a game, book, magazine- whatever your desired distraction and just ignore the holiday altogether. St. Valentine’s day was never about love in the beginning. It’s purely commercial hype. To read the true story click here: https://www.cbn.com/spirituallife/churchandministry/churchhistory/st_valentine_the_real_story.aspx
  • Watch the 5 hour A&E version of Pride & Prejudice. It’s my favorite love story of all time plus, it’ll remind you TO WAIT FOR YOUR OWN MR. DARCY! I watched it last night, by myself, while making my decadent french vanilla custards. I had a lot of fun.

**Follow me on Pinterest for many more ideas on activities, recipes, and shopping places.

And not to rub it in any faces, I just want to give a shout out to the love of my life, J. We waited a long time for each other- 24 long and lonely Valentines to be exact! He’s making me dinner, and I’m bringing dessert.

The Art of Gratitude

12 Feb

“I feel a very unusual sensation – if it is not indigestion, I think it must be gratitude.”
Benjamin Disraeli

“We hope that, when the insects take over the world, they will remember with gratitude how we took them along on all our picnics.”

Bill Vaughn

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”
William Arthur Ward

As the French Say: Merci!

Ugly Sweater

How many times has your mother or father pounded into your head to say “Thank you”?  Most of us are taught this simple act from the moment we begin to speak- even if we don’t feel the least bit grateful. That ugly sweater you got for Christmas from Grandma? I’ll bet that as soon as you opened that gift your mom gave you her special ‘don’t you dare say anything but thank you’ look from across the room. When you did say thank you, despite the fact you though the sweater was awful, I’ll bet Grandma felt wonderful about the thought she put into your gift. I can remember a few times where I had to bite my tongue, grit my teeth and force a sweet expression of gratitude from my lips when I really wanted to say really!? You actually thought I would wear that?

We say thank you for gifts, thank you for special favors, and thank you for assistance in times of need. But it’s not only the big things where saying thank you matters. We may use the expression as we’re handed our change in the store, thank you to someone who holds the door for us, or simply thank you to the person who passes us the salt at dinner. Here’s a test: Tally how many times you use those two small words in a day. You’ll be amazed at how many times you actually say it without thinking.

Gratitude towards God

You know the one person who probably hears thank you the least? Your heavenly father. We will say thank you twenty times to the barista who never makes our coffee right (because we just don’t have the heart to tell her) but when was the last time any of us expressed gratitude for our savior? As Christians, we often spend the majority of our prayer time telling God what we need. Many of us don’t realize really how selfish our prayers can be. “God save ME! God help ME! God come through for ME!”  (the keyword here being- me) How annoyed would you feel as a heavenly king if the people you gave your life for only ever came to your throne with needs or wants?  More realistically, how annoyed do you feel when you do something for a friend or family member and don’t receive any gratitude from them whatsoever?  It certainly isn’t a good feeling is it?

For the past few months I’ve been begging God for a job, for an apartment, for all my bills to be paid, for a larger salary- blah, blah blah- but rarely do I ever bow my knees and just express my gratitude for what he has given me, asking for nothing in return.

Not anymore

I am writing this post today with a full heart. This past week has been a whirlwind of answered prayer (Thus explaining my lack of posts)! I got a job offer from a wonderful company that was beyond anything I could have imagined. I held my faith, pressed in for my need and God came though for me beyond my wildest dreams!!!!!

THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU GOD! I want to shout it from the rooftops and dance!!!!

Psalm 92:1-5 (NLT)

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to the Most High.
It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning,
your faithfulness in the evening,
accompanied by the ten-stringed harp
and the melody of the lyre.

You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!
I sing for joy because of what you have done.
O Lord, what great works you do!
And how deep are your thoughts.

Why Should We Give Thanks?

thank you

1 Giving thanks to God honors Him. When you give thanks to God, you’re giving all the glory to him- the only one who DESERVES it. When you acknowledge that all the glory and honor belongs to Jesus Christ, you are acting in obedience to his word. (see Lev 22:29)

2 Giving thanks to God refocuses our attention. What better way is there to remind yourself who is Lord than to thank him? This will help you remember all the good things he has done, rather than causing you to only focus on what you need.

3 Giving thanks to God releases us from anxiety. In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul tells us not to give in to worry but to pray and let God take care of it. It’s the only way to live with peace in our tumultuous society.

“6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (NLT)

Don’t get me wrong- God still wants us to come to him with our needs. I still need to find somewhere to live, to work out my finances, and to go through months of training in my new job. But at the same time I am so thankful for what God has done for me. We should never forget to tell God how grateful we are to have that we DO have, rather than always focusing on what we DON’T yet have. God is going to come through for all of us in his timing- it’s up to us to have the faith to see it through to the end.
